ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

By Bob Walsh

In 1783 the first manned untethered ballon flight took place over Paris. The flight lasted about 25 minutes and covered about 5.5 miles.

In 1877 Thomas Edison announced the development of the phonograph.

In 1916 the Britannic, sister ship to the Titanic, sank in the Aegean sea. She was at that time serving as a hospital ship. An explosion, possibly a torpedo, damaged the ship and the captain attempted to beach her. Unfortunately the nurses on board had opened the port holes previously to air out the wards and that did not help the situation. A total of 30 people died when she went down. Many of them were in life boats that were lowered when the ship was still moving pretty good. They were sucked into the propellers and chopped into kindling with the passengers on board. Interestingly enough one of the nurses on board who survived had also been on board the Titanic when she went down.

In 1980 350 million people tuned in to find out who shot J.R.
