More
than 20 years ago California voters passed Proposition 209. It banned
consideration of race in university admissions, public employment and
public contracting.
In
a straight party-line vote the Democrat-Socialists have got enough
votes to put ACA 5 (Assembly Constitutional Amendment) on the ballot
this November. If passed it would allow CA to return to official
discrimination against groups based on race.
Much
of the opposition to this is coming from Asian-American student groups
who are afraid (justifiably) that they will be fucked over on UC and
CSU admissions policies. Currently Asian-Americans make up about 15
percent of the CA population but over 30% of the UC and CSU
admissions.
