Jackie
Speier is an American success story. She managed to not get killed at
the Jonestown Massacre and parleyed that singular achievement into years
in the CA legislature (both houses) and then the U. S. Congress. I
remember her only slightly. Once upon a time, many years ago, she got a
burr under her saddle about how awful prisons were. So she did an
overnight field trip to DVI (a men's prison) where she spent the night
in a cell, with one of her office assistants if I remember correctly.
It was in a PC unit. Her cell door was not locked over night and they
got to use the bathroom at the officers station rather than the
facilities in the cell. I do not believe she / they ate either dinner
or breakfast with the "residents" of the unit. I am unsure what, if
anything, the exercise proved other than that her driver could find
Tracy.
At any rate she
announced a couple of days ago that she is not running for reelection
and wants to spend more time with her family. Her district covers parts
of San Mateo County and San Francisco County so I can't image she would
not win reelection should she choose to run. Perhaps she just got
tired of the bullshit and has picked up enough in graft and kickbacks
that she can afford to retire.
One less career politician is a good thing in my books.
