Lionel
Womack had been a police detective in Kansas. He is now dead after a
bizarre incident, lasting less than 30 seconds, in which he attacked two
cops.
On Monday the local
constabulary received a number of 911 calls about a man standing in the
road and pointing at the sky, then jumping into traffic. The cops
showed up and Womack charged them. He tried to get into the patrol car
from the passenger side but was unable to do so. He then charged around
the car, reaching towards the back of his pants giving the officer the
idea he was reaching for a gun. The responding officer pulled his own
duty weapon. At that time Womack jumped into the driver's seat of the
patrol car and the officer attempted to extract him. A fight ensured
over the weapon during which two shots were fired. The fight ended up
with Womack in possession of the officer's weapon. Womack then covered
the second officer with the stolen weapon, at which time he was shot to
death by the second officer.
Womack
had been with the Kansas City P D since 2007. He made detective in
2018 but was sacked in August of 2020 after a string of policy and
conduct issues. Womack had come from a law enforcement family with five
members of his family, including both parents, current or retired
officers. Womack's wife is still a Kansas City cop. Womack sued the
Kiowa County S O last year asserting that a deputy deliberately drove
over him in a farm field. Womack was well known, well respected and
well liked within the department until his problem started last. year.
My
guess, for what that may be worth, is some undiagnosed mental health
issue or substance abuse problem that was well concealed led to this
man's downfall. Damn shame.
