A
dozen idiot cops in the Torrance CA P D may very well send hundreds of
solid criminal cases down the crapper because they thought it was
acceptable and/or amusing to send racist, sexist, antisemitic and
homophobic text messages back and forth. They also talked on these
texts about lying to internal affairs and thumping on suspects.
This
situation has already led to 85 criminal cases going down in flames.
It has also just led to the CA A.G. launching an investigation of the
Torrance P.D.
I am
guessing that these text messages were sent either on terminal devices
in police cars (that would be really, really stupid) or on department
owned cell phones. It is of course possible that they were lame enough
to give the powers that be probably cause to search their personal phone
records.
None of the current or former cops involved have been on the receiving end of any criminal charges. Yet.

These cops are stupid. Once you pin on the badge your life is an open book. It doesn't make any difference if you used a department device or not. If it can be proven that you used a personal device to share department/case information then your personal devices can be searched for messages. These cops will be scraping shit off their shoes for a long time.
