Even If It Is Almost Certainly Not Repeatable
By Bob Walsh
On
September 13 a few guys, having nothing better to do (actually it was
all carefully planned) in Wyoming decided to break the long-distance
rifle shot record, previously held in Texas.
They
nailed an 8" bullseye on an 8' X 10' backer at 4.4 MILES. It took 24
second for the bullet to get there, which means they had to allow for
the rotation of the earth. They were at 7,000 feet which made it a bit
easier due to the thinner air. The bullet impacted at 48 degrees, which
is kind of like shooting a mortar.
The shot that did the job was the 69th shot fired that day.
The
weapon was a Barrett 416/50.. This is a 50 caliber BMG case necked
down to take a .416 caliber bullet. This is the cat's ass of serious
long range rifles, if you have a spare $12,000 or so plus a couple of
dollars per round for ammo.

Sounds like he just lobbed it in. Looks like he used a mountain range as a backstop. Still a Hell of a shot.
