Between January and August 2022, a West Coast crime ring stole 44,000 Catalytic Converters Worth $22M

 

Catalytic converter theft is a HUGE issue in the formerly great state of California.  The God-Emperor, Gavin Newsom, just signed a bill into law that prohibits scrap dealers from buying these items from casual walking customers.  They can now legally only be sold by "licensed car dealers" which includes wrecking yards and a few large car repair operations as well as more traditional new and used car dealers.

It is just barely possible that this move will cut significantly into this practice, assuming that there is follow-up.  The devil is in the details and people who WANT to support theft and don't care who knows it will fine a way if they are allowed to.
