One Suspect Killed, Another Wounded After Drug Dealers Rob Undercover Cop During Sting
Dale City, VA – Police have released a Ring camera video of the fatal officer-involved shooting of 19-year-old Jaiden Malik Carter that occurred after drug dealers robbed an undercover detective during a multi-agency drug task force sting operation in Prince William County last week (video below).
Police said the incident occurred after arrangements were made with a confidential informant for an undercover Manassas City police detective to buy a large amount of fentanyl and at least one gun from known narcotics dealers, WJLA reported.
Three suspects met up with the undercover detective in the parking lot of the 14700-block of Fox Glove Court in Dale City at about 7 p.m. on Sept. 1.
Ring video from a nearby home showed the one of the men – later identified as Jalil Michael Turner – got out of a black car and into the detective’s silver vehicle.
Police said Turner got out of the undercover detective’s car a few minutes later and then returned with Carter, WJLA reported.
Turner got in the front seat of the silver car and Carter sat in the back, according to police.
Investigators said that at some point during their conversation, Turner pulled out a handgun and robbed the undercover narcotics detective of money and other property, WJLA reported.
Police said a third man – later identified as Shane Dareon Pollard – stayed in the driver’s seat of the black car and moved the vehicle to block the detective’s exit.
The undercover detective said Carter ordered him to open the trunk of his car, and then he and Turner stole money and other property before getting back into the car driven by Pollard, WJLA reported.
Video of the parking lot showed several undercover police vehicles pulling into the parking lot as Turner and Carter jumped into the getaway vehicle.
A minivan pulled directly in front of the black suspect vehicle and blocked it.
Video showed the front door of the suspect vehicle opening and shots fired between police and the suspects.
“These events led up to the exchange of gunfire with police, which continues to be [investigated by] the Critical Incident Response Team,” Prince William County police said in a press release after the incident.
Pollard and Carter were both shot in the exchange, the Prince William Times reported.
The video showed that after the exchange of gunfire, the driver put the black car in reverse and tried to flee but instead rammed the vehicle into two other parked cars.
Officers ordered the suspects out of the crashed vehicle one at a time, the video showed.
Turner was able to follow police commands to get out of the vehicle and was taken into custody.
Pollard opened the driver’s door but appeared unable or unwilling to follow officers’ order, according to the video that was filmed from the other side of the vehicle.
Officials have not yet said whether there is bodycam from the incident.
Prince William County police said officers recovered two handguns from the suspects at the scene, one which had been “illegally modified to be fully automatic with an extended magazine,” the Prince William Times reported.
Pollard and Carter were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Carter ultimately died of his wounds, WJLA reported.
The Arlington County Police Department is heading up the investigation into the officer-involved shootings, the Prince William Times reported.
Officials said two Prince William County police detectives and two City of Manassas police detectives fired their weapons during the incident.
All four detectives have been placed on paid administrative leave while investigations are conducted, as is protocol for all officer-involved shootings, WJLA reported.
The results of the Arlington County police investigation will be given to the Commonwealth Attorney for Prince William County who will ultimately determine whether any charges should be filed against any of the detectives.
Police said Pollard was wanted in connection with an unrelated carjacking in October of 2021 at the time of the shooting, WJLA reported.
Both Pollard and Turner were charged with robbery resulting in death, the Prince William Times reported.
Turner was also charged with using of a firearm in the commission of a felony, according to police.
Pollard remains in custody in the hospital and Turner has been held without bond at the Prince William-Manassas Regional Detention Facility, the Prince William Times reported.
Carter’s family has claimed the 19 year old was in the wrong place at the wrong time, WJLA reported.
Family members have planned a protest of Carter’s shooting by police at Cloverdale Park on Sept. 10.
Police said no members of the drug task force were shot or injured during the incident, WJLA reported.
