“God Created Her as a Girl!” – Rabbis Insist Transgender Child Remain in Girls’ Class
“One must recognize the identity in which they were created. Imagination does not change reality.”
A group of leading Israeli rabbis has joined a parents’ protest over the integration of a transgender child into a segregated boys’ class at a religious school in central Israel.
“One must recognize the identity in which they were created,” read a letter sent by the rabbis to the State Religious Education Council that oversees religious public schools.
The child in question began undergoing a “gender transition” while in the second grade, apparently under the influence of her mother. This was not revealed when the child was enrolled at the school and identified as a boy.
Many of the other parents were furious when they discovered the truth, but the Ministry of Education insisted that the child would continue to study under her chosen gender, meaning she would be placed in the boys’ class.
In backing up the outraged parents, the rabbis wrote:
“Jewish religious law (Halacha) does not recognize artificial changes and forbids dressing a boy as a girl or a girl as a boy. This girl must join the girls’ class. It is the role of a religious school to maintain Jewish religious law and act on it.”
At the same time, the rabbis were not unfeeling toward the child. They stressed that she should be patiently aided to “recognize the identity in which she was created. Imagination does not change reality. God created her as a girl, a wonderful creation, with the privilege to grow up as a woman and a mother.”
A statement released by the LGBT community in Israel harshly attacked the rabbis and accused them of incitement:
“The rabbis’ letter will lead to mental harm and could cost human lives in this and other cases. It is also in complete opposition to the professional and medical authorities in Israel and around the world.”
In remarks to the N12 news portal, the lawyer for the protesting parents shot back:
“Assertions that these parents are fighting an 8-year-old child are demagogic. The parents are fighting for the Torah education they chose to send their children to. And this education has simple rules, such as honoring Shabbat, wearing a kippah and a certain dress code.”
He went on to note that the authorities hid the gender identity of the child because they knew it would be unacceptable to parents at a religious school.
“This is the heart of the problem. That they encourage and conceal the behavior of a mother who decided that her daughter, already at the age of two, is now a boy, and then imposed this progressive agenda on an entire school, even though it goes against everything the school believes in.”
