Many Things Don’t Make Sense, Including the UN Security Council

Almost every day things happen in Israel and around the world that don’t make sense. When Russia took over the presidency of the UN Security Council on April 1, I knew it wasn’t an April Fool’s joke, as some media portrayed it. The presidency rotates every month and it’s Russia’s turn. Nowadays, people better understand how ineffective and downright crazy the UN has become. For decades, the world body has condemned Israel for all sorts of things, and few governments have shown sympathy for the Jewish state in its conflict with the Palestinians. But few if any have been willing to acknowledge that the UN makes no sense when it comes to Israel. This despite the fact that the UN is supposed to ensure world peace, but has brought only more conflict to the region.

 

Putin and Netanyahu have a long history together.

 

The truth is becoming increasingly irrelevant. The sages of the Talmud described the Messianic Age with the so-called “Paths of Messiah” (בְּעִקְּבוֹת מְשִׁיחָא) as a period when “the truth is no more.” Almost every day things happen that make no sense, lack integrity, and have no trace of morality, confirming again and again that these wise men were correct.

From 1967 to 1989, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) passed 131 resolutions that dealt directly with the Arab-Israeli conflict, most of them condemning Israel. By 2013, the State of Israel had been condemned in 45 United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) resolutions. Since the creation of the UNHRC in 2006, it has passed almost as many resolutions condemning Israel alone as on issues affecting the rest of the world combined. The 45 resolutions account for nearly half (46%) of all country-specific resolutions passed by the UNHRC. The standing UN resolutions have nothing to do with the truth in Israel’s case. How many times has Israel had to defend itself against the lies of the UN? For Israel, the truth was not heard.

 

For the UN, Israel is the aggressor. 

 

But now governments, especially European governments, are looking at the UN Security Council with a critical eye, because this time it affects them directly. Russia has invaded Ukraine and President Vladimir Putin has been declared a war criminal by the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Now, however, Moscow determines the agenda of the UN Security Council. The Security Council has remained trapped in an old way of thinking that has nothing to do with the political reality and power relations of the 21st century. USA, Russia, China, Great Britain and France, the five “veto powers,” are the expression of an anachronistic situation that does not represent the changes in global geopolitics.

As president, Russia can hold its own meetings in the Council. The first will deal with the risks arising from the violation of agreements regulating the export of arms and military equipment, and it is expected that Russia will attack countries for supplying arms to Ukraine. Israel’s Foreign Ministry is concerned about an intensification of Moscow’s criticism of Jerusalem after Israel reportedly approved the sale of military defense equipment to Kyiv for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine. In April, when Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, will serve as President of the Security Council, Israel will be attacked in the usual discussions of the Middle East and the Palestinian conflict with the classic themes of “Israeli occupation” and “illegal settlements.”

While Israel and Russia have long coordinated their activities in Syrian airspace to avoid clashes, relations have become very strained since Russia invaded Ukraine last year. This is also the reason why Jerusalem is careful not to publicly criticize Moscow for invading Ukraine. While the Israeli military does not comment on specific attacks in Syria, it has admitted to conducting hundreds of sorties over the past decade against Iran-backed groups trying to gain a foothold in the war-torn country. Of course, Russia knows about the targeted Israeli air and missile attacks in Syria. When Israel talks about the impending threats and war scenarios, it means those emanating from the north. Hezbollah, Syria and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard are preparing for a war with Israel and this is prevented by Israel’s security forces. That’s the truth.
