THE SALARY FOR RURAL TEXAS SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES IS WAY TOO LOW

Rural Texas sheriffs, stretched thin, are getting an injection of cash from state lawmakers

With little in local tax revenue to help pay staff, rural Texas sheriffs are often forced to do more with less. Lawmakers hope a new grant program will help rebuild the ranks of rural law enforcement.

When a lot of your help are eligible for welfare you are paying too low.

Yes, rural police deserve and should get better pay. The issue is where's the money coming from. They could have fewer officers and pay more or cut some other service (water, roads, judges salary). Most of the people living in the rural areas ate just as poor as the police officers so increasing taxes isn't a viable option.
