SOMEWHAT DEPRESSING

By Bob Walsh

Photo taken by Army Pfc. George Burns at the summit of Mount Suribachi is nearly identical to the so-called "gung-ho" photo shot by the AP's Joe Rosenthal.

US Marines pose proudly with the American flag atop Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. 6,140 Marines and Navy corpsmen were killed during the battle on the small island.

I had the only American Flag flying on my house on my whole block during Memorial Day.

Those who forget their past are doomed to repeat it.

EDITOR'S NOTE: That's probably because you're in California. There were lots of American flags flying in my neighborhood.

We put ours out on Memorial Day, July 4th and Veterans Day. The retired Marine that lives down the street raises and lowers Old Glory every day. We also fly the Texas Flag on Texas Independence Day which has nothing to do with the USA.
