TEXAS POLITICS UPDATE

By Howie Katz

Speaker Dade Phelan and challenger David Covey

Challenger David Covey was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Attorney General Ken Paxton. But while those endorsements kept the election close, they did not succeed in ousting incumbent and Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan.

Phelan won reelection by 51 percent to 49 percent of the vote in the Beaumont, Texas district.

However, Phelan may not be able to keep his speakership of the Texas House. Statewide there were a lot of ultra-conservative Republicans elected who will want to oust Phelan from his speakersip. Look for a dog-and-cat fight to erupt among Texas House Republicans.
