ONE OF THE LAST OF ITS KIND BITES THE DUST

by Bob Walsh

The Woodward Island Ferry, running across Middle River between Woodward island and West Bacon Island in California since 1936, is about to be retired. A 675 foot bridge is currently under construction which will obsolete the ferry. The ferry has a 30 ton limit and farm equipment occasionally falls off of it into the river. Also the cable can be a hazard to boaters.

As an interesting design feature the center span can be physically removed to enable things such as barges with cranes on board access to the area if necessary. The clearance is 30 feet with the bridge in place.

They figure the bridge will be finished in two months. It has been under construction for one year.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The bridge has been referred to as "The Bridge to Nowhere."

Woodward Island is not nowhere. You can, however, see it from there.
