In what might be a sign of things to come a BLM candidate for congress knocked off a long-time sitting representative.
Cori
Bush , a BLM organizer, beat William Lacy Clay in the Democratic
primary election. Clay had held this seat for 18 years. Ms. Bush also
challenged Clay two years ago, and lost by 20%.
This
is a solid Democrat district, meaning that winning the primary is
pretty much the same thing as winning the general election. Ms. Bush
will almost certainly become the first Black female representative from
Missouri in congress.
Clay
was as member of the Progressive Caucus and a supporter of both Medicare
for All and the Green New Deal, so this was not just a liberal versus
non-liberal vote.
Bush
was supported by a group known as the Justice Democrats. They also
supported AOC, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Talib in their runs for office.
