A Chicago cop partially paralyzed in a gun battle that killed his partner Ella French in August left a rehab facility more than two months after being shot four times.
Carlos Yanez Jr., who was shot in the eye, cheek, brain and back during the brazen attack by two convicted felons during an Aug. 7 traffic stop, was met by applauding well-wishers and a mariachi band during his Thursday send-off from a city rehab center, the Chicago Tribune reported.
“We were just overcome with joy that he’s survived, let alone made some improvements along the way,” Yanez’s father, Carlos Yanez Sr., told the newspaper. “The good thing we are most happy about is that his personality is still there, and his humor and his outlook on things.”
Yanez said doctors were unable to remove all four bullets lodged in his son’s body, leaving him without movement on his left side due to a wound on the right side of his brain.
But the wounded cop, who must remain in a wheelchair for now, is able to move his fingers while regaining strength in his left arm as he returns home to be with his wife, Brenda, and 3-year-old son, CJ.
“He was able to hug his son again, very few times he has been able to do that, and hold him,” the elder Yanez said.
Further down his recovery road, Yanez wants to work at youth centers in the Englewood area, his dad said.
An online fundraiser set up to help offset Yanez’s medical costs had garnered more than $369,000 as of Friday.
“Anyone that knows Carlos will say what an amazing human being he is,” the website reads. “He is just so genuine. We all know him as a strong, hard-working and good-hearted soul.”
Yanez Sr. said the help from the community has been “astronomical” and “overwhelming,” the Tribune reported.
