A new $1.1 billion capitol building in California will have secret corridors for lawmakers to use to avoid the press
The formerly great state of California is building a very
substantial new legislative office building on the grounds of the state
capitol. This required the removal of a fair number of mature trees on
the grounds. Strangely enough when reporters asked the actual
groundskeepers how many trees were going away they got a number MUCH
larger than what the press office was releasing. A few people figured
that if they were lying about that what else might they be lying about.
They
found an interesting thing. There have been over 2,000 non-disclosure
agreements signed in relation to this one building. Including those
signatures are at least five members of the legislature and a lot of
paid staffers. That is odd. When the media started poking around the
project they could get virtually zero information on ANYTHING about the
new building.
One of the
things that they THINK is happening is that the building is being build
with a lot of "secret corridors." These are not actually going to be
all that secret, they will however be restricted in that the peasants
and media will not have access to them. It takes a lot of design work
to do this sort of thing. But nobody is talking. They are citing the
NDAs.
Thanks to Governor
Newsom signing the bill yesterday it is no longer legal for members of
the legislature to sign NDAs on items concerning their official duties.
It isn't wonderful. It might not even be really helpful as much of the
"oversight" of the project is being done by paid staffers and not
legislative members. But it is a start.
