RECRUITING SOCCER PLAYERS THE NEW ZEALAND WAY

Hoping to land her son on his team, soccer coach sends player’s mother a picture of his dingdong. It worked. But when her son did not get to play regularly, mom returned the picture. Trouble is, she did not return it directly to him, she sent it to the governing officials of the national team.

COACH RESIGNS OVER EXPLICIT E-MAIL

WELLINGTON. - NEW Zealand Football has accepted the resignation of its national youth team coach who acknowledged e-mailing an explicit picture of himself to the mother of a prospective player.

NZF chairman Frank van Hattum said Monday that Steve Cain had resigned for 'personal reasons' but might be considered for another coaching position in future. Mr Cain is one of only two professionally licensed football coaches in New Zealand, along with national coach Ricki Herbert.

Mr Cain told the Sunday News that 'in a moment of madness' after 'a few beers' he had sent a picture to a woman which partially showed his genitals. He said the woman, the mother of a youth team prospect, had been sending him explicit e-mails and had 'pestered' him to respond.

Mr Cain said when the woman's son did not gain a regular place in the national team, she sent his e-mail to New Zealand Football.

Mr Van Hattum said there was a possibility Cain had a coaching future within New Zealand football.

'I don't see why not, but we're not prepared to comment on that at the moment, about what may or may not happen in the future,' he said. 'He offered his resignation for personal reasons and we accepted that and therefore the matter is at an end.' -- AP
