LIFE IMITATES ART

by Bob Walsh

Something interesting happened in the political arena yesterday (01-14). A new President was inaugurated in Guatemala.

That president, Jimmy Morales, has zero political experience and was in fact a professional comedian on television.

He ran on an anticorruption platform, which wasn’t hard. The prior president and VP were ousted in a corruption scandal. Guatemala is in most ways a third-world shithole with crushing poverty and rampant corruption and is overrun by violent criminal organizations.

Morales won in a runoff in October. Both the former president and VP are currently in the slammer.

It will be interesting to see if Morales can carry through on his program. The people seem to be with him, but organizational inertia can be a truly hard thing to overcome.

I hope President Morales cleans out corruption. Guatemala is a beautiful country with people in dire need of an honest leader.
