NO STICK SHIFT, PLEASE!

Nashville teens, 15 and 17, arrested after they tried to steal a car but couldn't operate the STICK SHIFT

Two Nashville teens looking for a joyride ended up in juvenile court instead when they tried to steal a car but couldn't drive stick shift.

The suspects, aged 15 and 17, have been charged with attempted robbery/carjacking, theft, and attempted theft of a vehicle.

The teens first tried to steal a woman's car in a shopping mall parking lot around 6.20pm on Tuesday.

Authorities said the teens each ran up to one side of her vehicle, opened the doors, and demanded that she get out.

The teens allegedly tried to pull the woman out of the car, but she screamed and held down her car horn.

Police said the woman sustained minor injuries from the attempted carjacking but did not need to be hospitalized.

An hour later, the teens tried again.

This time they approached a woman who was walking to her car in a grocery store parking lot.

Authorities said the teens grabbed the woman's keys out of her hand and jumped inside the car.

But they ran away when they realized it was a manual transmission.

The teens were arrested after they were spotted by police, who took them into custody.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This reminds me of way back in California when all state workers who operated state vehicles were called out to take a driving test. My group was tested on top of a large parking garage. There were about a dozen of us, half of them women. The test car happened to be a stick shift model. The women could not even get started because none of them knew how to operate a stick-shifted car.

Proper planning prevents poor performance.

A manual transmission installed in all new cars would probably reduce auto theft by 90%.
