FIRE CAMP RIOT INJURES CORRECTIONAL OFFICER

by Bob Walsh

I don't remember this EVER happening before. Prisoners at a minimum custody fire camp rioted in the Klamath area, injuring a California correctional officer in the process. Three inmates were also slightly injured. A fair chunk of the inmate population of the camp was rolled up and sent to Pelican Bay.

Under the old rules you had to be a pretty decent person (by prisoner standards) to even be considered for fire camp. It was a highly desirable job. Now, with many of the light weight offenders doing time in county hospitality centers they have had to "alter" (lower the bar) the criteria for fire camp placement. It guess it maybe isn't working out so well.

We had a pretty good riot at camp Cuesta adjacent to CMC West on the central coast in '93 or '94. I was temporarily assigned to the camp as a vacation relief officer, but missed the fun, as it occurred on my RDO. No officers were injured thankfully, but several inmates were carted off to the hospital with stab wounds. The riot was quelled when shots were fired from a couple of perimeter towers on the adjacent level 2 yard.
