PARKLAND NON-RESPONSE OFFICER ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH FELONY

by Bob Walsh

Scott Peterson, formerly a Broward County S.O. school resources deputy at the Parkland School in Florida on Valentine's Day 2018 is now facing eleven criminal charges, including felony child neglect and perjury, for his non-response at the scene.

He was fired formally on Tuesday. I don't know how that works as he retired and was collecting a pension. The new sheriff, Gregory Tony, did the deed. Sgt. Brian Miller, who was also at the scene on that day, was also canned. (Maybe firing him attacks his pension some how. I am not up on that.)

Peterson is being held pending $105,000 bail. The peace officer's union will fight the charges on his behalf. Peterson had 30 years on the job and, up until that day, had an exemplary record and a couple of respectable commendations.

I admit to mixed feelings about this. I find it difficult to prosecute a guy for one fuck-up. That being said it is hard to understand how to justify hiding behind a concrete pillar while people are being killed inside the building. The "active shooter" training for years has been simple. Don't wait for SWAT. Don't necessarily wait for back-up. Don't stop to render aid even. Move to the sound of the gunfire and engage the bad guys. Peterson didn't.
