MISSOURI WELCHES ON JAIL DEBT

by Bob Walsh

The great state of Missouri is way, way behind on money it owes to local jurisdictions for housing miscreants.

The state owes Buchanan County over $550,000. It owes $2.5 to the city of St. Louis, and $1.9 million to Jackson County. The state is typically about 6 months behind the curve on the billing cycle. Also, state law says the state is supposed to pay $37 per day. In fact they only pay $22.58. The estimated actual cost per day in a decent jail is about $60.

Maybe if they were to quit taking the prisoners the state would pony up.
