On Thursday, just a few days after local prosecutors vowed to prosecute the last defendant, a former CHP officer, four years of trail involving nine defendants is done.
The case started in 2012 in the death of Korey Kauffman. In 2015 nine people were charged in the death. There has only been one conviction, that person pled out and ratted on the others, including a prominent local defense attorney and two cops. Trouble is, the jury didn't buy it.
The last remaining defendant, former CHP officer Walter Wells, had been held in jail for 16 months against a $10 million bond. Finally the charges were reduced to obstructing justice and an accessory after the fact. Those charges went away last week.
The trial of the lawyer, Frank Carson, and brothers Baljit Athwal and Daljit Atwal, went on for 14 months.
Several lawsuits have been filed against the county in these cases, alleging criminal misconduct, false arrest and malicious prosecution.
