As of yesterday there were 813 known (admitted) deaths from the Coronavirus, almost all of them in China. This exceeds the number of 774 deaths known from the SARS epidemic 16 years ago. They are now over 37,000 known infected persons. (Still way under what the flu does in any given year.)
China has finally decided to allow WHO personnel to enter their country. I am not sure if this is good or bad, but it is long overdue. It could be they think they have a handle on it and want to show off. It could also be things are so fucked up they have finally acknowledged that they could use a hand. That is a HUGE thing for a totalitarian government to do.
Chen Qiushi, a "citizen journalist" in China who has been reporting on the situation and who has been pressing for freedom on electronic media in China, has disappeared. It is not clear if the disappearance is voluntary or not. Cell phone video from China has shown people being grabbed by the authorities and forcibly removed to understaffed, under-equipped hospitals.
There are now questions being openly asked in Japan about the upcoming Olympics.
