One week ago Travis McCoy, 26, and Adriana Smith, 28, were having a beef in their apartment in Chicago. It is alleged that the weapon discharged while they were fighting over it, sending out a bullet that ricocheted off of something in their apartment and hit the 1-year old in the head. The bullet did not penetrate the baby's skull.
McCoy then ran with the child to Weiss Hospital. The child is in serious condition.
They have both been charged with one misdemeanor count of child endangerment. McCoy has also been charged with felony filing a false report. Smith has been charged with felony obstruction and destruction of evidence.
There is something in this story that just does not add up. It is not impossible, but that would have had to have been a really odd bullet bounce. In addition there are very few apartments that are sufficiently bullet resistant to achieve that effect, though I guess a frying pan could do the job, depending on the caliber of the weapon involved.
