MAYBE JUST A TAD TOO LITERAL

After being directed to turn in his equipment immediately, fired police chief walked home in his skivvies

by Bob Walsh

Richard Lee has been the Chief of Police, and in fact the entire police department, in the town of Croydon, N.J. for 20 years.

On Tuesday night the selectmen informed Chief Lee that they were disbanding the P. D. and that the State Police would be taking over the police duties in the town. He was directed to turn in his equipment "immediately."

He took off his equipment, including his uniform, weapon, and badge and the keys to his cruiser, turned them in to the board (with who he shared an office) and walked most of the way home in his underwear before his wife drove to pick him up.

Lee said he is discussing the situation with his attorney.

A one person police department is a waste of time. If the town can't afford 24 hour shift coverage then it should let the County or State cover the City. The burglars will wait to hit when the one person PD goes home for supper.

I strongly suspect he existed primarily for traffic control and to issue gun permits.
