SOME HOBBIES ARE INHERENTLY DANGEROUS

by Bob Walsh

Mad Mike Hughes, 64, is never going to make it to 65. He built a steam-powered "rocket" for a gig on The Science Channel and attempted to launch himself to 5,000 feet near Barstow on Saturday. That part was successful. It appears that maybe the launch vehicle rubbed against the support structure on takeoff and damaged the parachutes. It landed hard. Hughes did not survive the landing.

Hughes was, interestingly enough, a "serious" flat-earth proponent.
