ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

by Bob Walsh

In 1937 the airship Hindenburg made a spectacularly unsuccessful landing at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station just outside of Manchester Township, New Jersey. Remarkably two-thirds of the people on board survived. It did, however, put a serious ding in the lighter-than-air passenger transport business. At the time the U.S. controlled production and sale of significant quantities of helium so the Nazi's had to use hydrogen to get the lift necessary.

Most of the helium comes from the Texas Panhandle.

Today in 1836 the Alamo fell. Jackson Rusk a defender from Ireland who had joined up with Davy Crockett died in the fight for freedom. He left Nacogdoches in such haste that he never completed his land grant paperwork. This included listing any relatives. No record was ever found for his birth in Ireland. Today I take a moment to thank these heroes who gave all.

My youngest grandson bears the name Jackson Rusk.
