ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

In 1862 the Confederate ironclad Virginia, formerly the wooden-hulled U S S Merrimack, sank two Federal warships off of Hampton Roads, bringing in the dawn of the armored warship.

In 1917 the February Revolution that overthrew the Tsar and brought in the Bolsheviks started. (The Russians were still on the Julian calendar at the time.)
