Ted Cruz Wants Texas to Secede if U.S. Comes to a 'Point Where It's Hopeless'

Senator Ted Cruz recently described a possible secession plan for Texas if "things become hopeless" in the United States.

Appearing at Texas A&M University last month, Cruz was asked by a young person in the audience what the best course of action would be if the Lone Star state decided to break away from the rest of the country.

Cruz said he understood "the sentiment behind the question," but he isn't ready to secede right now.

"I think Texas has a responsibility to the country, and I'm not ready to give up on America. I love this country," he said, prompting applause from the crowd.

 

"Texas—we're brash, we're not shy, we're sometimes larger than life," Cruz continued. "Texas is, right now, an amazing force keeping America from going off the cliff, keeping America grounded on the values that built this country."

But the senator said he could be swayed to do so if certain things changed.

"Now listen, if the Democrats end the filibuster, if they fundamentally destroy the country, if they pack the Supreme Court, if they make [Washington] D.C. a state, if they federalize elections and massively expand voter fraud, there may come a point where it's hopeless," Cruz said. "We're not there yet."

"If there comes a point where it's hopeless, then I think we take NASA, we take the military and we take the oil," Cruz added, evoking more applause.

Cruz then was asked by a moderator if comedian and commentator Joe Rogan could join the independent state. The podcasting giant has been a frequent critic of COVID-19 mandates.

"Joe Rogan, he might be the president of Texas," the senator joked.

This summer, the Texas Nationalist Movement launched a campaign to get a so-called "Texit" referendum vote on the state primary ballots in 2022. The effort needs at least 76,854 valid signatures of registered Texas voters.

The movement's website says Texit "means that Texans determine our own laws and not 2.5 million unelected bureaucrats in Washington. It means that we get a government that begins and ends at the borders of Texas."

During the Texas A&M University event the senator also discussed vaccine mandates, Columbus Day, gender-neutral bathrooms and more. The discussion was recorded as a live episode of his podcast Verdict with Ted Cruz with his co-host Michael Knowles, a conservative media host at The Daily Wire.
