OFF-DUTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTY MURDERS COUPLE, THEN SURRENDERS

By Bob Walsh

There is certainly more to this tragic tale, but these is the basic facts of the matter.

Devin Williams Jr., 24, came from a solid home with an affluent background. He graduated from college with honors.  He was a cop in Stockton for a year, but was washed out on probation in January of 2021, just before his year was up.  His separation was not conduct related but considered his inability to develop the skill set needed.

A while later he applied with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.  They did a very thorough background on him and concluded there was nothing in his background that would prevent them from hiring him.  He had been with the S.O. exactly one year today.  He worked the courthouse detail.  He often worked extra shifts at the main jail.

Shortly after midnight this morning, while off duty, he entered a home in Dublin and shot to death a woman, 42, and a man, 58, who lived there.  He knew the couple but the exact nature of the relationship is not clear.  Three other family members were at home at the time but were not injured.  The family is Asian.  Williams is Black.  The shooting occurred about 1 hour and 45 minutes after Williams got off shift at the jail.  The house is only a few minutes drive time from the jail.  The cops are very interested in knowing what Williams did for that hour and 45 minutes.

Williams was very quickly identified as a suspect in the murders.  He surrendered a few hours after the incident following a long phone call with the Dublin police chief.  Williams was located in Coalinga and surrendered when approached by the CHP who had been directed to his location.

I had a partner fresh from the academy who had graduated from UT Austin. I was warned about him before our 1st shift. He thought his degree was all he needed. He argued about policy and law every shift. He would not pick up on common sense street smarts. He never made probation.

Some people are just not suited for the job. That does not mean they are bad people, it just mean they are not cop material.
