The San Jose (CA) PD has come up with a tactic to stop sideshows and street takeovers that may actually be working.
They
spot the situation initially with an air unit then block the area in.
The tactic needs over 100 people and almost that many vehicles but they
just essentially cordon off everything then move in and start issuing
citations. Last week they issued over 700 citations at one sideshow,
temporarily detained 500 cars and impounded 17 of them. Also in CA it
is now illegal to spectate at an illegal sideshow.
It
remains to be what penalty these citations will carry but previous
tactics do not seem to work that well. Unfortunately typing up 100 cops
for a full eight-hour shift is expensive, but that might be the only
way of dealing with the situation.
