Torrance is a bedroom community
in the greater L. A. area. Population about 145,000. The city just
paid out $750,000 to Kiley Swaine, a criminal, because a bunch of cops
were really stupid.
Swaine
got stopped by the cops and arrested ack in January of 2020 for
suspicion of mail theft. (He was later cleared.) Apparently the cops
though it would be appropriate to spray pain a swastika and a happy face
on the upholstery in his car before they had it towed.
This
incident launched both a federal lawsuit and an internal
investigation. As you might expect cops stupid enough to do something
like that were also stupid enough to send a LOT of racist, homophobic,
inflamatory text messages back and forth between themselves.
The
lawsuit was just settled. Criminal charges for vandalism and
conspiracy are still pending against the two now-former officers. Also
the D. A. had to shitcan a bunch of criminal cases these two idiots were
involved in.
