A Muslim resident of Jerusalem is facing charges after he hurled stones at a group of Jewish visitors near the Temple Mount earlier this month.

Azaldin Bashiti was charged on Sunday by the Jerusalem District Attorney’s Office. According to the indictment, about a week ago he was on the roof of his home in Jerusalem’s Old City when he spotted a group of 30 Jews who were doing a tour of the city’s gates, including those of the Temple Mount.

Bashiti proceeded to hurl seven large stones at the group. Security guards accompanying the visitors managed to find cover for them and miraculously no one was hurt.

Temple Mount barricade cleared

In related news, police on Saturday forcibly removed hundreds of Muslim who had barricaded themselves atop the Temple Mount with the intent of spending the night there and then disrupting morning Jewish prayers at the Western Wall below.

A statement issued by the Israel Police read:

“Following information that was received about the intention of some of them to violate public order in the morning hours before the start of visits to the Temple Mount [and after] prolonged negotiations with the Waqf [Islamic Trust that oversees the Temple Mount] …most refused to leave the place. Therefore, police had to enter the Temple Mount to take them out in order to prevent disorder and disruption of…the visits of tourists and Israelis taking place there, in accordance with the visiting hours and the accepted visiting rules.”
