The Stanford Law School dean of Diversity, Equity and
Inclusion who participated in and encouraged the heckling of a federal
judge who had been invited to speak at the school was suspended last
month. (I was out of town when this happened so did not write about it
in a more timely manner.)
The
target of this harassment was Stuart Kyle Duncan, Judge of the U. S.
5th Circuit. He was appointed by Donald Trump in 2018 and is generally
considered to be conservative.
The
Associate Dean for Diversity, Tirien Steinbach, announced among other
things that the judge's mere presence at the school was "painful" for
some of the students.
Law
school dean Jenny Martinez wrote (in a ten-page letter) that the
administrators of Stanford Law had failed to enforce the school's speech
policy which specifically prohibits shouting down and heckling
speakers.
It has not been
announced yet how long Tirien Steinbach's suspension will last, or if
that has even been determined yet. None of the students involved have
faced nor apparently will face disciplinary action.
