Kamala Harris brushes off Afghanistan failures in West Point speech 

Harris warned the graduating cadets that “an accelerating climate crisis” is one of the biggest challenges they will face

Vice President Harris addresses West Point grads.  

Vice President Harris brushed off America’s botched withdrawal from Afghanistan in a commencement address to West Point graduates Saturday.

“The world has drastically changed, a once in a century global pandemic took millions of lives and disrupted life for billions more. America ended our longest war, and Russia launched the first major ground war in Europe since World War II,” Harris said in a brief speech to the new cadets.

The vice president did not mention Afghanistan in the five words she devoted to the topic.

But she took the time to warn the cadets that “an accelerating climate crisis” is one of the “biggest challenges the military will face during their careers.”

Afghanistan was swiftly reconquered by the Taliban after the United States withdrew in 2021, ending a 20-year campaign.

A bomb blast at Kabul airport left 13 American soldiers dead in the final days of the U.S. occupation, while videos of desperate Afghans chasing planes went viral across the world. 

 Vice President Harris delivered the commencement address to West Point graduates on Saturday. “The world has drastically changed,” Harris said.

 

The House Oversight Committee is currently investigating the debacle.

Unlike President Biden’s address to Howard University last week — Harris mostly steered clear of 2024 campaign rhetoric or hot button culture war issues and used her remarks to underline the importance of the U.S. military.

“Global security and global prosperity depends on the leadership of the United States of America and a strong America remains indispensable to the world,” she told the 950 grads at the Orange County, NY institution.
