There is a large car carrier ship right now off the coast of
Rotterdam that has been burning for about a week. Its cargo of
automobiles includes a few hundred electric cars. They think that
some problem with the batteries on one or more electric cars started a
fire, and the vessel has only limited fire fighting capabilities.
Yesterday
it was towed further out to sea until they can get a salvage crew
aboard and figure out what to do next. The ship will be anchored about
ten miles off of the island of Schiermonnikoog pending whatever.
The
ship is carrying a total of 3,783 new cars including 498 electric cars
headed from Bremerhaven to Singapore. Fire fighters have decided so far
to NOT just flood the ship as that would probably make it unstable.
There is a major bird sanctuary nearby that they don't want to pollute
any more than necessary.
