SURF'S UP, PIER'S DOWN

By Bob Walsh

Pier collapse

The last 150 feet or so of the Santa Cruz Pier was wiped out by wave action today.  It had been damaged a couple of months back and the king tide and storm coming in with exceptionally high waves all along the coast was too much for it.  Three construction guys who were on the repair detail went into the water.  One managed to swim to shore and the others were rescued though they lost some equipment along the way.  The city and the construction people say that they did check the pier and the weather reports and believed it would be safe to work.  I guess they were wrong.

There were other people nailed by the exceptionally high surf along the coast though only one is missing and presumed drowned.

10 years ago I was offered a very good deal on some waterfront property. I declined because it was after a recent Hurricane. It sold and I regretted not purchasing it. Guess what? The property is no longer there.
