Heisman Trophy winner ran for 2 TDs, passed for 2 TDs and broke the Cotton Bowl record with 516 total yards
In the past, many Heisman Trophy winners fizzled out while playing in the bowl game that followed the award ceremony. Not so with this football season’s winner. Instead of fizzling, Johnny Manziel sizzled in Friday’s Cotton Bowl as Texas A&M University completely dismantled Oklahoma University 41 – 13.
Manziel, TAMU’s freshman quarterback who just turned 20, surpassed all expectations. He rushed for 229 yards and 2 touchdowns on 17 carries. He completed 22 of 34 passes for 287 yards and 2 touchdowns. Manziel’s 229 yards rushing broke the Cotton Bowl record for a quarterback and his 516 total yards also broke the bowl record. His rushing total also set an FCS record for a quarterback in a bowl game.
‘Gig ‘em Aggies’ and gig OU they did! Manziel credited his teammates for his record setting performance. But there is no question that the Heisman Trophy winner’s performance was instrumental in the dismantling of the Sooners. Those who watched the Cotton Bowl game have no doubt that Johnny Football, as Manziel is known in Aggie land, is the real deal.
