SOME ERRORS ARE UNRECOVERABLE

by Bob Walsh

Officer Lee Coel of the Punta Gorda, Florida, P.D. is now unemployed. Last year he fatally shot Mary Knowlton, 73, during a role-playing exercise at a "citizen's academy." Officer Coel is also being prosecuted for criminal culpable negligence-first degree manslaughter.

It is a damn shame for a man to lose his job and livelihood over an honest error, but he also had an affirmative duty to reasonably safeguard the students in his class and clearly screwed the pooch on that one.

Sometimes there are no good outcomes.
