CLUB MED IT AIN’T

Desperate inmates bang 'SOS' on walls of freezing Brooklyn federal detention center after going SIX DAYS without power and heating in frigid weather while huge protests gather outside

The crisis reached a head on Saturday as protesters rallied outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in the industrial waterfront section of Sunset Park, where inmates banged on the walls of the jail and flashed nightlights in a plea for help.

On Sunday the protesters were sprayed as they tried to enter the prison together. Some were thrown to the ground, others crying and gasping for air from the pepper spray.

A fire last Sunday cut off power and heat to parts of the jail, according to motions filed this week in federal court by lawyers from the Federal Defenders who represent some of the inmates.

Since then, at least some of the more than 1,600 inmates at the jail have suffered in near-freezing temperatures and in darkness after the sun goes down while locked in their cells for 23 hours a day, according to the court filings.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons revealed that power will be fully restored on Monday.

I thought the feds ordered TDC to air condition some of their facilities a couple of years back.

They did but work is slow and not all units were included. I think it has to be a declared severe heat emergency. I don't know who makes the declaration.
