MAYOR SAYS SHAME ON DALLAS COPS FOR TRYING TO BESMIRCH REPUTATION OF WRONG APARTMENT COP’S VICTIM

Dallas cops searched apartment of Botham Jean and seized, among other items, 10.4 grams of marijuana and a pot grinder

Street demonstrations continued in Dallas after it was learned that the police were “assassinating Botham Jean’s character” by revealing they had searched his apartment and found 10.4 grams of marijuana and a pot grinder.

An attorney for the Jean family said the only reason for the police to obtain a search warrant for marijuana was to sully the victim in order to make officer Amber Guyger look better.

On Friday, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings shamed the cops for besmirching Botham Jran’s reputation while at the same time defending his police chief. He said:

We need to be like Bo. Sadly many aren’t. Today there are many on social media and news outlets that want to spread false innuendos. Bo was a great man. And I am disturbed today by those who try to besmirch his reputation. Shame on you. Stop it. There are others that want the same, to do the same to Chief Reneé Hall, for her to lose her credibility. She has courageously made the right decisions and we should all stand with her.

Whether it’s smearing the ethical credibility of black elected officials that happened in our city horseshoe a couple of weeks ago or by attacking our first African-American female chief or dishonoring the life of Bo, it seems to be an insidious habit by some of being overly critical of black individuals with notoriety. This has got to stop on social media. We need them to stop and we must do our part. We must be united to honor these people not tear them down.

I think searching Jean’s apartment to find discrediting evidence on him was a mistake. It wasn’t necessary. Her fellow cops can’t save Guyger by claiming Jean was a pot head.

I doubt that the motive of the search warrant for the victim's apartment was an attempt to besmirch his character. If the police leaked what was found then that's different. Usually the press will get a copy of most documented affidavits when requested. Maybe people should wait and see just where the info originated.

Police and DA investigators routinely search a crime scene after the fact with a warrant. I'm sure the DA was interested in finding out if there was a prior relationship between the victim and the officer. In this case they would be remiss if they didn't do it.

The Mayor needs to quit grandstanding.
