Jean-Claude Van Damme says the secret to keeping fit is maintaining the correct posture, and that two short workouts a week will train your body to like exercise.

The Belgian-born actor, 59, appeared on Good Morning Britain from his Los Angeles home, where he explained that the most important thing to keep in mind while getting fit is ‘learning how to stand’, and says most people don’t have the ‘right posture’ while walking or running.

He advised ‘elevating your chin’ when walking and making sure your hips are in the right position, while also claiming that two short workouts a week will make your body want to exercise at a certain time.

‘With age the head becomes better, but the body has to adjust. Like a car that drives a lot, you have to adjust the car’, he said.

'The most important thing is understanding how to have a good posture, then you can do what you want.

'A lot of people have flat feet when they walk, they don't tilt their hips in the right position so their back won't be as straight as possible.

'The heart has to beat, so many beats a minute, by opening your cage you're saving maybe ten beats. Stuff like that is very simple, but we have to start step by step.

'You cannot run before walking, you have to walk nicely, in a very nice way, in terms of physical posture.'

Speaking of opening up your rib cage, he explained: 'To open the cage you have to roll the shoulders and lock into a position where you open the cage'.

When asked how to get over the mentality of not wanting to exercise, he explained: ‘By making your training happy training.

‘Training 15 minutes a day, twice a week so your body is going to want to do it at a certain point in the week, of the month. So your body will say “Hey, where's that walk around the block”. That's all you need to do.

The actor has been teaching online work out sessions from his California home, and the five-part YouTube series breaks down a variety of different home workouts that will build muscle, and increase flexibility.

When asked how he was coping with lockdown, Jean said: ‘It's good, I’m training I’m doing stuff on TV and social media.

‘I’ve been around the world, so I’ve see the virus and it's not an easy one. People are growing scientifically, with the advice of the medical boards and if they get together, it will be greater.’

My wife has a Fit-Bit watch. It really helps her stay in shape. Even though she has had 4 shoulder surgeries in the past two years, she manages to walk 10,000 steps each day. It takes me 22 steps to the fridge for a Miller.
