SPECIAL ELECTION IN CA 25

by Bob Walsh

There is going to be an election in the CA 25 congressional district, which is the far north end of LA County mostly with a chunk of Ventura County thrown in. Palmdale, Barstow, picturesque places like that. It may be interesting

It had been held by a Republican for some time. It is, or maybe was, actually a fairly conservative district. However it was picked off 18 months ago by Democrat Katie Hill, who was forced out barely a year later in a sex scandal. It is sort-of a two-fer as whoever wins tomorrow will fill the remainder of the term, and both candidates will again run in November for the full term.

Christy Smith is running for the Democrat-Socialist party. Mike Garcia is running for the Republicans. Smith is currently a member of the CA state legislature. Garcia is a former fighter jock and an executive at Raytheon.

The interesting part is the Covid-19 effect. The election is supposed to be by mail, with some modest drop-in facilities to deal with bumps along the way. Then the Governor decided to open a more substantial in-person voting set-up in the only major Democrat chunk of the district.

All registered voters have, in theory, already gotten a mail ballot. The RNCC is said to be readying a legal challenge depending on how the vote goes due to what they claim is uneven handling of the election operation.

We should know in just a couple of days which way it has gone.
