A GOOD DECISION OR A COLOSSAL MISTAKE?

The states of Texas and Mississippi have ended the lockdowns and revoked the mask mandates

By Howie Katz

The governors of Texas and Mississippi have ended the lockdowns and opened their states 100 percent.  They have also revoked the mask mandates.  It remains to be seen whether these were good decisions or colossal mistakes.

President Biden, Dr. Fauci and the CDC were quick to condemn the decisions, pointing out that they came just as Covid cases were rising again. especially those of the variants from the UK, Brazil and South Africa.

Biden accused the governors of "Neanderthal thinking" and Dr. Fauci said "Now is not the time to pull back."

Only 20 percent of Americans have so far been vaccinated and Texas ranks 48th among the 50 states on a per capita basis.

Health professionals agree that vaccinations are key to stopping the Covid pandemic.

It appears that Texas Governor Greg Abbott threw caution to the winds, especially in view of the state having such a low rate in vaccinations.

I Know that the lockdown is hurting the Texas economy and is devastating to small businesses and the people who have lost their jobs.  So the sooner we can end the locksown and open the state 100 percent, the better!

However, the actions by Abbot and Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves may have been premature and become colossal mistakes.  And in any event, revoking the mask mandates will only prolong the pandemic.

If Abbott's decision ends up as having been the right one, he will have a good shot at becoming the Republican candidate for president in 2024.  But if his decision turns out to have been a colossal mistake, Texas could turn blue in 2024.

People, businesses and work places can make their own decisions. Our restaurant and bar business was just about in the crapper. Big events that people stake their livelihoods on such as Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and sporting events were shut down or reduced capacity venues. I don't think you really know what is going on because you don't follow local threads such as FB. People were literally begging friends and relatives for food and money. Desperate people posting for any type of work to feed their families and pay the rent. Yes, evictions are back on. Colossal Mistake? No. It took guts to open Texas back up and I support Governor Abbott's decision.

We will know in about six to ten weeks, but unless there is a huge resurgence of one of the new strains that miraculously has a higher degree of lethality, this is the right thing to do IMHO.

I beg your pardon Trey, but now you've pissed me off. I don't need Facebook to show me the devastating plight being suffered by businesses and people due to the lockdown. I mentioned that in the article ... so stop getting your exercise by jumping to conclusions.

While I hope Abbott made a good decision, I trust the scientists more than politicians like the governors of Texas and Mississippi, and the President of the United States.

As an aside, I did not post two comments submitted for this article, both of which were personal insults. One was from that asshole Dave Freeman and the other one by an Anon which sounded very much like it was written by Freeman.

I always have and will continue to post all comments that disagree with me and why, like your comments, Trey, and those of Bob Walsh. But I do not have to and won't post any more comments that are personal insults.

Settle down. If this is all it takes to PISS YOU OFF then maybe you should take a nap. I read your blog. I made a comment not a condemnation of you or the blog. Biden can barely make a complete sentence so a quote from him is not an endorsement of anything. Of course, a "Good Decision" or a "Colossal Mistake" does tell me something. Why couldn't you have simply written a "Bad Mistake?" Colossal seems so enormous.

I lot of people agree with my opinion.

It sounds like Dave Freeman and Anon pissed you off. What I wrote shouldn't have.

Jobs are already being posted. This is wonderful.

Kemah Boardwalk, Galveston Pleasure Pier hosting job fair Wednesday
With Spring Break rapidly approaching and the summer season right around the corner, the Kemah Boardwalk entertainment district and Galveston Island’s Pleasure Pier will be hosting a pair of job fairs from 10AM to 5PM Wednesday (3/3/2021).
Both properties are part of Landry’s.
Kemah Boardwalk General Manager Jacob Bigger said full time and part time positions will be available for job seekers at both locations. Servers for a plethora of restaurants and ride operators are among the positions available.
Most positions are considered entry level and won't require experience, Bigger said, but jobs such as ride mechanic will require a modicum of expertise. Some of the restaurants, he said, may also prefer candidates with serving experience.
Bigger said whether you're a college student home for spring break or someone seeking a more permanent position, the Boardwalk or Pleasure Pier should be able to accomodate your needs.
Most positions will start at $10 or $11 an hour, aside from servers, who earn a bulk of their pay through tips.
The Kemah job fair will be in the conference room at the human resources office, located next to the Kemah Boardwalk Inn.
The Galveston job fair will be located in the rear of the San Luis Resort on The Seawall.
For more information, go online to landrysinc.com or call the human resources department at (281) 334-8902.

It wasn't Freeman and Anon that pissed me off. It was your remark "I don't think you really know what is going on because you don't follow local threads such as FB."

I don't need Facebook to know how devastating the lockdowns are. Galveston is no more impacted than wherever else the lockdowns are.

I don't believe the country should have ever gone on lock down, individuals could have made lockdown choices if the wanted. We have created a massive financial problem for the weakest segment of our population.

Yes a few more people may have died, but covid would have been over long ago.

Howie, I wrote a detailed response to your comment. Then I deleted it. This is stupid. I am done. Go argue with someone else.
