SOMETIMES LOOKING IN THE BASEMENT CAN BE FUN

by Bob Walsh

The University of the Pacific is the oldest university west of the Mississippi.  It was founded in the bay area in 1851 and moved to Stockton about 100 years ago.  A couple of weeks back the current president, Chris Callahan, found an OLD safe in the basement.  He couldn't open it so he asked the fire department to come over with a jaws-of-life device and pry it open.  They were happy to oblige.

They found a TON of neat stuff in there, including a Babylonian clay tablet and a bunch of old records, some dating back to the founding of the university, some written on velum.  Mike Wurz, the head of the special collections department, is having LOTS of fun with them.

Got an old trunk in the basement or attic?  Might be worth taking a look.
