Acting
Monday the California Supreme Court, by unanimous vote, gave a positive
and reasonable interpretation to Proposition 57. The ballot, passed in
2016 with a big push by Jerry Brown and major financial backing by
George Soros, compels the Dept. of Correction and Rehabilitation to
release a LOT of inmates early.
At question was whether the prison
could consider ONLY the most recent criminal offense to determine
suitability for early release or the inmates criminal history. The
court decided an inmates history was relevant and could be considered.
This is a good thing as it is not uncommon for an inmate to do a stretch
for something like commercial burglary who has an extensive history of
personal violence. This will serve to keep the violent assholes in the
slammer longer.
