A Dutch tourist was detained for making a Nazi salute during a photo
op at the former death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland, police said.
The 29-year-old woman, who was not publicly identified, was spotted
by guards making the hateful gesture Sunday while in front of the “Work
Sets You Free” gate at the site of the largest Nazi concentration camp
during World War II and the Holocaust, Agence France-Presse reported.
“The detainee was charged with engaging in Nazi propaganda,” police in Oswiecim said in a statement. “She confessed.”
The woman, who was issued a fine, put up the Nazi salute while posing for a photo taken by her husband, police said.
“She explained it away as a bad joke,” regional police spokesman Bartosz Izdebski told Poland Press Agency, according to AFP.
The woman’s husband was also reportedly questioned by police as a witness.
Promoting Nazi propaganda in Poland is punishable by up to two years in prison, BBC reported.
In 2013, two Turkish students were sentenced to six months in jail
for making a Nazi salute at Auschwitz, where more than 1.1 million
people were gassed or otherwise killed between 1940 and 1945, including
nearly 1 million Jews.
Nazi Germany, which oversaw the genocide of 6 million European Jews,
built the largest of its death camps in Oswiecim after occupying Poland
during World War II. Soviet troops liberated the camp in early 1945.
