It
appears that S&W is about to release a new self defense pistol
cartridge, the .30 Super Carry. It is so new that there is virtually
zero information available on it. The only hard info I have seen is
that Federal is loading it and it fires a 90 grain HST bullet.
So,
is this going to be essentially a .30 Luger with a little more oomph,
or a whole new narrow diameter case (i. e. .30 carbine) to allow more
cartridges in the same size magazine? Personally I am betting on option
#2, but I could easily be wrong.
It
is also IMHO an odd time to be cranking up a brand new cartridge. It
is both difficult and expensive to get "old" ammo right now let alone
anything new. But then again what the hell, nobody asked my opinion in
the first place. You would hope the people who make these sort of
decisions would know what they were doing. (Anybody own a .45 GAP
pistol?) When I find out I will let you know.

Well, further info is available. The cartridge is a straight-wall .30 case, very much like a shortened .30 carbine. The total cartridge overall length (COL) is the same as a 9mm so it will fit into a 9mm platform. The idea is to push a 100 grain (more or less) bullet at about 1250 FPS with minimal recoil. The smaller diameter case will result in being able to shove more cartridges into the same size magazine well. That won't help much in CA. NY and anyplace else where they automatically believe that any gun that holds more than ten rounds in a magazine is inherently evil, but in the real world it may very well be a good selling point. The SHOT show is coming up soon, I am confident it will debut there and the reviews will probably fawn all over it.
I can't make the Shot Show 2022 this year. I usually accompany my son or meet him there. This year his department is down on personnel, so it's all hands in units for the foreseeable future.
